Houston's history begins at the bayou and we believe Houstonians are "coming home" again. In 1836, one block away, the confluence of the Buffalo and White Oak bayous was the farthest inland that a steam boat could turn completely around. Thus, brothers John and Augustus Allen hoped that bayou commerce would support a small town there. With unabashed optimism, they named it Houston after Texas" independence war hero. Their entrepreneurial dream and persistent vision are alive in Houston today.
As the Allen brothers' seeding of a town grew, the area known as the Downtown Historic District became the economic engine for the entire region. Fueled by the cotton and lumber trade, and later Spindletop oil discoveries, the area's historic buildings housed the major banks, financial institutions, law firms and trading companies whose successor companies still anchor Houston business today.
One of the critical components of early economic growth was the railroad. The Bayou Lofts is housed in the 1910 Southern pacific Railroad Building designed by noted Chicago architect Jarvis Hunt. It has one of Houston's first air conditioned systems. Its place as a truly historic building is confirmed by the fact that Southern pacific can boast the longest continuous occupancy of any company in Houston -- over 87 years.
The Bayou Lofts building has been completely renovated with all new electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems while many historic features have been preserved. The lofts have 11 to 18 foot ceilings, modern kitchens and baths, hardwood floors and reserved parking. Exposed brick surfaces give each loft its unique character. A variety of floor plans are available to choose from. Exclusive penthouse units are available for customization on the ninth floor. Construction is in its final phase and is nearing completion.
The lofts are priced from the mid $100 and up, and the average total monthly cost is comparable to the cost of renting a loft downtown (after tax considerations, the cost of owning may actually be less). Prearranged mortgage financing for the lofts allow up to a 95% loan, thus your down payment can be as little as 5%.
