The Memorial-area neighborhoods of
Wilchester and Wilchester West are nestled in the wooded area south
of I-10 and north of Buffalo Bayou, and bordered approximately by
Wilcrest Drive and Patchester. These neighborhoods, rated high for
their convenient location, outstanding neighborhood schools, and
upscale ambiance, have maintained popularity and stable home values,
even in declining markets. The native oaks and pines that remain
from the forest where the subdivision was developed help give it
a quiet, mature appeal. Buffalo Bayou Park, bordering both subdivisions
on the south, provides a quiet, natural setting for walking, biking
or nature studies.
There are approximately 1145 homes in these sister-neighborhoods
(620 in Wilchester and 525 in Wilchester West), most built in the
early to mid '60s as customized speculative homes by renowned custom
builders of the day. The majority have been refurbished or updated
to reflect present-day standards. Driving along the quiet, tree-lined
streets, one can't help but notice the pride-of-ownership reflected
in the manicured lawns and well-maintained homes that range in style
from Colonial to traditional. Common interior features include marble
entryways, spacious rooms, hardwood floors and walls of glass overlooking
landscaped, wooded backyards. Each subdivision has its own homeowners'
association providing deed restriction compliance, architectural
control, 24-hour security surveillance, and private garbage and recycle
pickup. Pools and tennis courts are available on a membership basis
in two nearby neighborhood facilities.
The schools serving Wilchester and Wilchester West are part of the
Spring Branch Independent School District and all have been recognized
for their excellence by the U.S. Department of Education. Elementary
children attend Rummel Creek Elementary School or Wilchester Elementary.
Older students attend Memorial Middle School and Stratford High School.
Each of these schools is routinely recognized for the high test scores
of its students and each enjoys strong parent participation. The
Westchester Academy for International Studies, located within the
subdivision, is an SBISD charter school offering small, personalized
classes for students in grades 6-12 who choose to specialize in languages
and international affairs.
