Museum District

As its name suggests, Houston’s Museum District encompasses a number of museums and other cultural and entertainment community venues. A selection includes The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Contemporary Arts Museum, the Museum of Natural History, the Children’s Museum, the Holocaust Museum, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, Hermann Park, Miller Outdoor Theatre, the Houston Zoo, and Burke Baker Planetarium.

Boundaries are approximate and generally accepted as Montrose Boulevard/Main Street on the west, Hwy 59 on the north, N. MacGregor Way to the east, and Hwy 288 to the south.

The Museum District offers home owners a blend of homes, fine restaurants, art galleries, shops and boutiques, and private and public schools. In line with Houston’s focus on inner city living, developers have played an active part in revitalizing the Museum District. Some streets choose the protection of strict deed restrictions while others opt for a harmonious blend of commercial and residential.

Historic homes reside next to new and recent construction real estate, vintage bungalows, duplexes, high rise condominiums, lofts, townhomes, and new garden homes. Gated Shadyside, founded in 1916, houses grand estates; vintage mansions designed by Houston’s finest architects of the 1920s and 30s line the oak-canopied esplanades of North and South Boulevards, known as “The Boulevards.”

The Museum District attracts a varied mix of residents that includes young urban professionals, Rice University professors, business executives, and medical professionals. Certainly one of district’s great attractions is its close-in location and convenient access to Downtown, the Texas Medical Center, the Galleria, and the Theatre District.

The Museum District continues to blend comfort and convenience with lifestyle. As a result, this area remains one of Houston’s most popular.
