Sandalwood is an upscale neighborhood in the heart of the Memorial area of Houston, just west of Piney Point Village and south of Bunker Hill Village, along Memorial Drive near Kinkaid School.

Treasured for its three spring-fed lakes and large beautiful lots amid mature trees, Sandalwood was originally developed in the mid-1950s on land that was formerly farmland and orchards, by Martin Nadelman and his son-in-law Howard Singer, best known for the resorts and small hotels they developed in Florida.

Legend has it that, originally, there were only two natural lakes on the land before Sandalwood’s development began. Nadelman and Singer created a third man-made lake so that each could be named after Singer’s three daughters – Patti Lynn, Robin and Lorrie.

Many of its original homes have been replaced with larger ones, beginning in the late 1990’s, resulting in a pleasant mix of mid-century homes that have been updated and luxury new construction. Sandalwood has a self-contained layout, with no cut-through streets, and the neighborhood boasts its own security patrol and very active homeowners association, the Sandalwood Civic Club, as well as a garden club.

The lakes are perfect for swimming and boating and the third lake, Patti Lynn, provides an on-duty lifeguard during the summer. Also, thanks to the lakes, the neighborhood has a popular swim team, the Sandalwood Snakes. Residents enjoy fishing or paddling around in small paddleboats and canoes, or walking and jogging its nature trails and private park.

Sandalwood is part of the award-winning Spring Branch Independent School System. There are also a number of excellent private and parochial schools in the area including the aforementioned Kinkaid, as well as Duchesne, Second Baptist, St. Francis Episcopal and more.
