Camp Logan

Camp Logan presents an ideal setting for young professionals and older individuals who value the nearness of theatres, museums, shopping and fine dining. Not only is the neighborhood a thriving enclave of vintage homes and upscale new townhomes tucked into the eastern edge of Memorial Park, but it also holds an important place in Houston’s history.

Camp Logan began in 1917 as a military training base for troops fighting in World War I. It was modified in 1918 into a military hospital and turned over to the U.S. Public Health Service. Convalescing soldiers enjoyed Houston’s first golf course, constructed on their behalf. Camp Logan was decommissioned and closed in March, 1919.

Will and Mike Hogg, sons of a former governor of Texas, then purchased the property and sold it in 1925 to the City of Houston, at favorable cost, for park use only. Named Memorial Park, it commemorated the fallen soldiers of World War I and provided a recreational oasis that remains one of the largest urban parks in the United States. In addition to a highly acclaimed 18-hole golf course, Memorial Park offers jogging, tennis, hiking, biking, softball, picnicking, Hogg Bird Sanctuary, and the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center.

Sanctioned by the Audubon Society, the Hogg Bird Sanctuary’s wild setting is ideal for bird watching, and local birders continually tally impressive lists from their visits there. The 156-acre Houston Arboretum and Nature Center (HANC) is one of the state’s first nature education facilities for children and is a protected haven for native plants and animals.
